I wonder if it might make sense to come up with two labels for the teachings: "Confucius" and "Confucius Prime". There is such a difference between the teachings as manifest in the old books and the cultural heritage. But then again, there is the same problem with the New Testament and what the Pope says---.

There is various terminology used in an attempt to differentiate between Confucius' teachings and Confucianism. For example, "Imperial Confucianism" to refer to the political ideology that emerges in the Han, "Neo-Confucianism" for the syncretism of the Song, etc. It's a tricky issue in any system of thought/belief/cultural heritage. I suppose it's one reason why historians have given Confucius a new surname "himself." As in: "Confucius himself says..."

I'm not so sure about this whole thing . . .

I mean, come on, after the Burning of Books and the Burying of Scholars, the survivors literally had to re-create the canon from memory. That, and Confucius' insistence that the Odes should be used as punctuation strongly suggests that he expected his disciples to have at least that Classic memorized.

Now, I agree that it should be divorced from monetary gains, but that is just creating an alternate currency for people to operate in -- analogous to modern impact factor in Academia. But I'm unconvinced whether an ideological currency is significantly different from any other form of currency.
