The Rambling Taoist

Excellent post! I think what it gets down to is a common Taoist theme -- balance. When there are two adults rearing children, there is a greater opportunity for them to find a way to balance out the various roles. When there is only one adult, balance is much more difficult to achieve based on the reasons you mention.

Ask Obama about who pushed him to do his schoolwork. He repeats the story of his mother waking him at 4 am to tutor him on his homework and, when he complained, she said, "It's no picnic for me either, Buster."

To add to the mix, I've been spending time with T'ao Yuan-ming and just read his poem reproving his sons. He is an interesting case with a great deal of Taoist flavor to his work but referencing again and again to the Lun Yu chapter of Confucius.

Maybe Mr. Welsh should read about the lives of both Confucius and Mencius. It could change his mind about missing fathers, and instead zoom in on one of the universal accepted reasons of broken families, for causing children to lose interest in their studies.

The ancient sages had each lost his father at a young age but that did not hamper their love for learning.

Kind mothers need not be doting. A very good example is the mother of Mencius whom Chinese mothers like to emulate. See this entry in my blog if interested:

No wonder the fathers are absent, they are in jail. “African-Americans, especially young black men, and especially poor young black men. African-Americans are 13 percent of the general population, but over 50 percent of the prison population. Blacks are incarcerated at a rate eight times higher than that of whites—a disparity that dwarfs other racial disparities."

The poor, the undereducated, the colored are locked up in jail, even for a small crime such as shoplifting or the possession of recreational drug, but the Wall Street bankers that are stealing billions, or hundreds of billions, are still getting their bonus. And they are sending their sons and daughters to Harvard to perpetualize the system. Some soft power sometimes isn’t so soft.
