Hmm, Sam, I thought "leading from behind" was the kind of phrase that sounds like something at first hearing, but after a while begins to sound like nothing.

American political culture is not Taoist. It is difficult to find instances where a parallel might exist between the two. As a model of Taoist thinking, I would suggest that the American political psyche is an example of someone killing themselves while trying to be healthy. Even when the motives are begnin, America is committed to absolute ideas and uses various methods to manipulate others externally. Ultimately, this is disharmonious and unsustainable. Governments and societies rise and fall in an inevitable cycle, but by being so forceful and acquisitive we are accelerating the evident cycle.
