Excellent stuff. I like your reasoning on the differences between Europe and East Asia. A more localised example on the culture question would be Taiwan and China. Very similar culturally (far more so than either would dare admit) but political union is unlikely for the foreseeable future.

There is one point to be made in relation to the American influence. There may (or will) come a time where the mutual interests of East Asian countries outweighs their relationship with America. This would be a pre-condition before an East Asian community could seriously evolve, but not the only one. At the moment they all can't face each other thanks to shrine visits and historical interpretations. Until the mutual animosity is dealt with and properly resolved, not swept under the carpet, it's going to be tension city. And it won't be resolved until it is in each country's political interests to do so.

I won't be counting my bird-flu free chickens just yet.
