I have no sympathy for Sarah Palin. She is obviously not prepared or qualified to be vice president, much less assume the presidency in a crisis. That is obvious. She did not have to accept the candidacy but she did, her ambition overwhelmed any shred of prudence she may have had. Thus, the embarrassment she has suffered is her own fault; she brought it on herself.
But what should she do tonight, as she stands before a national television audience? Many people have offered ideas. The Tao Te Ching, too, has some advice, which she and her handlers will certainly not heed. But here it is nonetheless:
Truthful words are not beautiful;
Beautiful words are not truthful.
Good words are not persuasive;
Persuasive words are not good.
He who knows has no wide learning;
He who has wide learning does not know.
The sage does not hoard.
Having bestowed all he has on others, he has yet more;
Having given all he has to others, he is richer still.
The way of heaven benefits and does not harm;
The way of the sage is bountiful and does not contend.
In other words, it might be time for Sarah to stop trying. Do nothing, Governor, and nothing will be left undone....
Palin is going to do just fine tonight. She's debating Senator "Windbag". All she has to do is wait for him to say something wrong, stupid or offensive. In other words, she'll let Senator Windbag be himslef, and bring Obama down while she smiles and waves to the millions of people at home who want to vote for her.
**Somewhere Hillary Rodham Clinton is laughing, and pointing at the tv while yelling "Oops, there it went! See ya in 2012!!~"
