"Confucianism operates best, then, in conditions of relative political and social freedom.'

Your conclusion of Confucianism as best acting as an ethical action from bottom up. How is this different from other religious teachings like Jewish or Christian teachings? yet, in United States today, ostensibly a Christian nation, we abhor government action in helping the poor, heal the sick, or feed the hungry in the name of individual freedom of choice. We want to feel noble in donating to charity yet against taxation to support the infrastructure of society. We condemn China being authoritarian, yet how can a society practice rite, love, or loyalty without satisfying the basic necessity of living.
